Merino wool is exceptional for performance outdoor wear because the fabric is excellent at regulating body temperature by keeping you warm on cold days and cooler on warm days. It has an excellent warmth-to-weight ratio compared to other wools, in part because the smaller fibers trap body heat. It draws moisture (sweat) away from the skin to provide excellent moisture management, the wool fiber absorbs and releases 10X the moisture of synthetic fibers. The extrafine fibers of Merino wool offer comfortable, no shrink next-to-skin layering without itch or odor.

Overall I fell in. In December. OK, not completely soaked, but I shipped water that ran from my neck all the way down into my boots. And it was a 1-way trip in a drift boat, so not easy to get back to the truck to change or warm up.
But with the Simms layers I was wearing, including the Merino Zip Top, I stayed warm all day and hooked 6 hot steelhead.
I've always thought wool was the best insulator, but was worried about its performance if it got wet. The Merino Zip Top convinced me. The design is great too, with a zipper covering "garage" that protects your neck when zipped all the way up. I like a slightly loose fit, and full length sleeves, so at 6' 2" and 230 lbs, I opted for an XXL and am pleased with the fit.(Posted on 1/17/13)

Overall I am truly impressed with the DownUnder Merino Zip Top from Simms. In my area of Ontario, we likely have more cold days then warm days and this has been a favourite top to wear as a baselayer when hitting the water or the woods. It also makes a great casual top too! At 5'10" and 175lbs, I opted for a medium. This is the perfect fit for a fitted base layer. If you like a looser fit, you may want to go up a size. I've always laundered separately in cold water and haven't had any issues. Great product!(Posted on 12/11/12)

Overall This is the new standard for keeping warm and comfortable especially on the John Day and Klamath when its in the mid 20's. Lived in the top for 4 days straight, odor free! This "next to skin layer" Rocks! (and keeps me on the water in extreme cold conditions... able to work... and play). Never without it... thanks Simms!(Posted on 7/17/12)
