CleanStream™

Product Care

Footwear Care:

For proper cleaning of your footwear to descrease the likelihood of spreading Aquatic Invasive Species, please reference our CleanStream™ page.

If using in saltwater always clean and rinse to prevent corrosion.

Use a brush to remove dust and dirt. Choose an old vegetable brush or toothbrush. For maximum thoroughness, remove laces prior to cleaning. Use specialized boot cleaner, saddle soap or maybe a mild dishwashing soap with luke-warm water.

Do not use bar soap or detergents.

Do not place wet boots close to a heat source (fireplace, campfire, wood stove, radiator, heater, sunny windowsill) as this can weaken adhesives and cause materials to become brittle or shrink.

Dry using natural methods (air dry) and try to keep them out of the sun for long periods of time. Boots dry faster when positioned upside-down. If desired, stuff a sheet or two of newspaper into each boot to absorb moisture. Change the paper each hour.

If you see any mold on your boots, brush in a mixture of 80% water and 20% vinegar.

Over time the use of leather conditioners may provide increased water repellency and can prevent cracking and drying of the leather.

Store footwear in a place where temperatures are stable and normal. Do not store footwear in attics, garages, car trunks or any unventilated spaces.

Never put footwear in washing machine.

Finally a great boot that fits! Review by Dave M49
Overall
After several years for struggling with too small wading boots, I went on a deliberate search for good, well-fitting boots. The Freestones are the best - and as far as I could find with an extensive search - the ONLY size 16EEE wading boots made! For the first time, I was actually comfortable fishing and hiking in these boots! They performed extremely well - with the neoprene collar snugging them well above my ankles and providing great support, yet enough give to not be difficult to walk in. Simms is absolutely correct in sizing them: one size bigger than your street shoe. I wear 15EE's and the 16EEE was perfect when worn with a athletic sock and neoprene stocking foot waders. Total comfort - and best of all - very EASY to put on and off. The heel straps are large and allow for use of 3-4 fingers to pull them on. Very nice.

I was concerned about the Vibram soles since I'd used felt soles - however, that seems misplaced. I was careful in foot placement on slick rocks but never had any traction or slipping problems. The tread worked very well.

Others have written that they seemed slow to dry. Although I have only used them once so far, I didn't find that to be the case. Ruggedly made and tough, they ought to give me years of use.

Awesome Boots Review by Das Beak
Overall
I recently picked up a pair of these boots and I can't complain. They offer a lot of support and paired up with the Hardbite Cleats they are even more amazing I can get way more grip in the water to get to my favorite spots. I probably would have given them 5 stars but I've only had them for a month. Time will only tell. I fish at least 4 days a week 5+ plus hours each time they haven't shown any signs of wear yet. My only complaint is I wish Simms would give you a sticker or two

Big men leave big impressions. Review by Piano Man
Overall
These boots are fantastic. And thank you Simms for recognizing that without you EEE size many of us would be left on the banks. A lot of outdoorsmen like me wear clothes north of XL. And most likely that "larger than life" frame is supported by something larger than medium width feet. Thank you for being a company that recognizes a "wider" market. It is obvious to me that your competition doesn't look down at the feet of their patrons. What a waste. I hope you walk away with the EEE boot market. Keep up your great work.

A little heavy, but strong and long lasting! Review by Jordan
Overall
Worn these for over 2 years of fishing with about 100-120 days of total fishing at 6-8 hrs per day. They are a little heavy, but extremely comfortable for long wear. My only issue is on long jokes, and even then it's not terrible, but you might feel the weight of heavy feet.

In any case, I've finally worn the soles of these boots down to the point where I needed to do something and decided to add aluminum cleats instead of buying new boots. No tears, no separation and the boots with new cleats will give me a newish boot with years left for little cost $60 in aluminum cleats. I'm sold and love these boots. I will say that I did buy some Guide Boots, but I'll save them til these freestones wear out, which is probably a year away at least. Thanks Simms for making great gear.

Better than most but not as good as I wished. Review by Lea
Overall
Let me preface my review with the comment that I use these for stream surveys and put way more miles on them than the average fisherman. Around 5 miles a day 4 days a week 6 months a year.

I have been using these boots for several years now and they hold up better than any other boot I have used. However, they are useless without the star cleats and the one thing I get really frustrated with is how poorly the star cleat stays in the boot. Especially when you consider how expensive they are. The majority of the time the head of the screw holding the cleat in wears away and the cleat falls off. The other problem is after a while the vibriam sole wears down and then the screws tend to work their way out a lot quicker.

I go through a pair of boots evey three months and usually 25-30 star cleats during that time.

The rest of the boot is great. It has the ankle support that anyone who has walked in a stream will appreciate and though I have had occasional problems with the eyelets its not a huge deal the local cobbler fixes that for $3. Considering that a cabel's wader boot starts falling apart it 2 weeks, three months is great.

As far as sizing goes I normally wear a womens 8.5 or 9 and the Mens 7 works well for me.

Solid Boots but a bit like their name Stones Review by Karl217
Overall
I wear a 15 shoe so my options are quite slim for a 16 wading boot, thankfully Simms sells 16s, or else I would be out of luck, I have worn the Freestones for a good season of trout fishing and a winter of steelhead fishing, they have held up well so far.
1. get some cleats buy more than 1 pack if you are in a slick area, makes you feel like a mountain goat.
2. put some insoles inside of the boot, gives your feet some great support. and more cushion. I just use superfeet.
3. if your laces rot, which they will do, use waxed hockey laces they seem to repel water.

I hope that Simms would someday build another model like the Rivershed in a 16 because it would give us bigfoot avid fisher's and river trackers some more options because they free stones are a bit like their name "Stones" heavy.

Great boot with a great price Review by Jordan
Overall
I bought these boots over two years ago and have used them while wading the beaches fly fishing for cutthroat and coho. I've also used them for gardening and hiking. I've used them while working on ponds, and I use them every day for four months a year (I work at a fishing lodge as a guide and as a dock-hand) while running a boat on the open ocean. Paired up with the Pro-Dry pants, these boots look just as good as the day I got them.
A quick rinse with freshwater after every time I've used them in a salty environment and the odd power-washing has kept them in tip-top shape and I know I can expect to see many more days out of them.

Great value Review by Gerry
Overall
I have had these boots for over 2 years. Get the star cleats. I used them without cleats and it was like wading on roller skates. With the cleats they are as good as felt.
They are comfortable and durable and definitely a good value.

Good, but not good for Simms Review by Darwin
Overall
These were the first pair of Simms Wading boots that I purchased. I am on a budget like most people and thought that these would be the right choice-They felt pretty good in store. Truth be told, they are Amazing and worlds above other wading boots. They would definitely be 5 stars compared to other companies wading boots. My problem with them is that they dry SO sssllllooooowwwww. I am in water 2-4 days a week 5-8 hours each day for at least 3 months a year, and with how slow these boots dry I just knew they would mold or mildew.

Recently I purchased the Guide boots. They fit better, they feel better, and they dry quicker. Of course, you would expect nothing less out of a pair that costs approximately 55% more, right? As someone who has to do a lot of hiking in their wading boots, and someone who has feet problems, the upgrade just made sense-So I forked over the extra money.

My advise: if you are on a budget and only fish 1 or 2 days a week or less, and don't do much hiking during these trips, get these and don't look back. Don't consider trying on the Guide boots or you will want to splurge as well.

Sizing: I am a 11.5-12 (or occasionally 12.5) in normal shoes depending on brand. A 12 fit me perfectly. BUT, I have tried these on with other companies waders AND with my Simms waders, and as to be expected they fit like a glove with Simms waders but not quite so good with random_wader_brand_01.
