Shaw Grigsby Reviews Simms ProDry™ GORE-TEX® Jacket and Bib
- Product Care
GORE-TEX® Outerwear Care:
Cleaning your GORE-TEX® garments regularly will extend the life of the product. It will also keep them breathable as dirt and oil can clog the GORE-TEX® membrane over time.
It is critical to wash jackets. Natural oils can damage the GORE-TEX® tape and adhesives causing a peeling effect.
Machine wash warm. Do not use fabric softener or bleach.
Remember to zip all pockets and close all Velcro cuffs before washing to prevent any damage caused by the machine.
Tumble dry on warm setting making sure not to use a high heat setting. Drying on warm will actually reactivate the DWR coating.
GORE-TEX® PRO SHELL outerwear is waterproof, exceptionally lightweight and offers the ultimate in breathability, durability and extended comfort. Constructed with a woven backer, GORE-TEX® Pro Shell garments slide easily over other layers and offer exceptional tear strength and internal abrasion-resistance.
The AquaGuard® VISLON® zipper is a revolutionary new design from the global leader in containment closures. The AquaGuard® VISLON® zipper's new tooth design provides enhanced fluid repellency vs. coil or standard individual element closures, while increasing the number of design and color options for your application.
- Lightweight and Dry Review by Kevin
OverallAt first touch you will be surprised how light the shell feels. But the performance is all there. Super waterproof and windproof yet breathable with no clammy feeling in the cold. The waterproof cuffs are perfect. The stretch panels in the arms make for great casting.

- All Around Jacket Review by JR
OverallI am always out on the water and I have to say that this jacket is meant for every condition! I have worn this jacket in complete down pours without even worring about getting wet or cold. And then I have also worn this jacket when its sunny out. The breathability of the jacket is amazing. The jacket is light weight but also very warming. I will definetely be keeping this jacket around!

- Fancy Designers > Functionality, Not Review by Cottingham
OverallI bought a "G3 type" guide Jacket some, 23 years ago. I can remember my mother raising hell that "I would have spent so much $$$ on a fishing jacket"? However seeing that I wore it yesterday would arguably make it the cheapest article of clothing I have ever purchased. Sure it's a little "worse for wear" with some waterproofing challenges in the shoulders but after 23 years it's design & functionality are superior to the ProDry garment.
Too bad the designers never put the jacket on, synched the hood section up and tried to bass fish (make 1,000 cast) while checking electronics and trolling motor from the deck of a Bass boat in the pouring rain.
Had they, they would have learned that due to the angle of fabric between the synch bands water rolls under the lip and down the inside of the hood portion an saturates the upper chest area. I have tried multiple configurations of adjustment, all to the same outcome. If the garment is loose and hood up, water flows freely off the jacket but you must stand like a "monk" for this (probably the same position the engineers took while testing it in their facility).
The only solution I have found is put on my OR rain hat over the hood.
I would also add, that the "Y" flap piece of fabric in the bottom of the crotch zipper section of the bibs makes it very difficult to get to your "junk" when under three or four layers. Get rid of that.
for producing some of the best fishing products available.

- Would love to buy but......... Review by Tartan Man
OverallAs someone who doesn't mind paying for built to last quality that does the job, i really like this jacket as well as the bib and brace. The big downside is there is far too much advertising on them. Yes the products will do the job but at a cost of being a walking advertising board for Simms and Gore-tex. Yes, i understand the need to advertise the good name of Simms but the name appears just too many times and is far too bold on these products. If Simms could do the same version of these products with the same qualities but had more subtle advertising then i think they would sell in huge numbers, myself included. Let the product's performance, quality and durability do the talking not the Simms name plastered all over it. A lot of fisherman want top quality gear and don't mind paying for it,myself included, but we don't want to walk around like "Flash Harrys" on the water. If Simms could introduce to the market the same products but with a lot less advertising then i for one would be the first to purchase them.Thanks. Kind regards, Tartan Man Scotland,Great Britain

Thanks Tartan Man. If you like the fit of the ProDry but want less branding, check out the Slick Jacket or the Acklins Jacket. Links are below. It does say Simms on the front but the hits are much more subtle.

- Fantastic Foul Weather Jacket Review by Mr. PGS
OverallI guide the salt waters of Rhode Island where spring and fall weather can be unpredictable. I have kept the jacket and pants in my foul weather gear bag (always with me) all season and besides being light weight and easy to pack, they have kept me bone dry in downpours and severe side sprays. In a center console there is no where to hide so to be covered head to to in solid rain gear is essential. Several key features for me as a guide were the longer tail length, clear watch patch (timing tuna fight duration), lined throat protector and safety reflectors. I added the pants which are also great. Cons would be as the temps drop you will need layers underneath and I need to pay attention to flies and hooks as there is no real reinforced areas. Great mobility and arm movement as I am 6'2 and both guide fly and spin so range of motion was important. You get what you pay for here.

- Perfect for almost anything Review by Matt
OverallAbsolutely love this jacket. The fit is longer than most, which I love. Can't wear a short jacket while fishing, it bugs the crap out of me. Wore it everyday in the Fall and stayed dry no matter what. Love the hood, which fits over a hat nicely without getting in the way. The adjustments are also convenient. Couple all this with a durable construction, and the best warranty out there, and this is hands down my favorite jacket to wear. I almost hope for rain every time I go out, just to have an excuse to wear it. The only negative thing is the watch window. The window seems to be placed too far up on the arm, so I can't really see the watch unless I move it up. Also, the window gets foggy once you persperate. A cool idea, but with or without the window, this jacket is my favorite. They could definitely make this jacket better by adding the front pockets/zingers like one of the Guide jackets, that would be a dream come true.

- Billboard Review by Ben
OverallI would have love to get this jacket, but I cannot fathom the brains that decided to slam the Simms logo all over the place. Pro? Well, let the pros have logos on their sponsored gear and let us mere mortals go fishing without being billboards after having shelled out $500.
I'll pass...(leaving 5 stars as I havent worn the thing).
[Response from Simms Customer Care Team]
Appreciate the response Ben. As we mentioned to Tartan Man not everyone is into the heavily branded items. Take a look at the Slick Jacket or the Acklins Jacket. Links are below. Same performance, less Simms.

- Great Gear Review by FinDeep
OverallI Charter in New England and this foul weather gear has stood up to all of the elements. Wind, Rain, Cold (with layering). I highly recommend the jacket with out question. Long enough to cover the necessities and the best feature of all time, the open clear plastic for your watch. Brilliant. They are light so I would not test them on abrasion resistance but without a doubt my best foul weather packable gear yet.
