Simms G4 Boa® Boot

Product Care

Boa® Boot Care:

For proper cleaning of your boots to descrease the likelihood of spreading Aquatic Invasive Species, please reference our CleanStream™ page.

If using in saltwater always clean and rinse to prevent corrosion.

Use a brush to remove dust and dirt. Choose an old vegetable brush or toothbrush. Do not use bar soap or detergents.

Do not place wet boots close to a heat source (fireplace, campfire, wood stove, radiator, heater, sunny windowsill) as this can weaken adhesives and cause materials to become brittle or shrink.

Dry using natural methods (air dry) and try to keep them out of the sun for long periods of time. Boots dry faster when positioned upside-down. If desired, stuff a sheet or two of newspaper into each boot to absorb moisture. Change the paper each hour.

If you see any mold on your boots, brush in a mixture of 80% water and 20% vinegar.

Store boots in a place where temperatures are stable and normal. Do not store footwear in attics, garages, car trunks or any unventilated spaces.

Never put boots in washing machine.

Boa® Closure System Care:

We recommend regular cleaning of the eyelets and reel mechanism to prevent sand and silt from prematurely wearing on the cables. Use the tool provided to remove the reel and rinse thoroughly on a regular basis. This will ensure a long life for your Boa® system.

Boa® cables will need replacing over time just like a normal lacing system.

Boa® replacement cables are available on the Simms website, directly from Boa® or you can purchase spares at most fly shops. Always a good idea especially on destination trips.

  • CleanStream™ is a design philosophy that runs through our line of wading footwear. While not specific to a product feature, this designation does indicate that the product includes features and/or materials that are more resistant to "hitch-hiking" organisms – have less exposed stitching, fewer ridges & pockets and utilize non-absorbent materials – all making the boots easier to inspect, clean and dry faster. All of these elements assist anglers in doing their part to prevent the spread of invasive species. For more information, please visit our CleanStream™ page or these organizations: www.cleanangling.org, www.protectyourwaters.net or www.tu.org.

  • The New RIVERTREAD™ platform is designed for the demanding angler looking for the best wading footwear on the market.  RIVERTREAD™ features Simms’ latest engineered components to maximize comfort, performance, and slip-resistance.  The molded 3D footbed with arch support and ball flex aligns the foot for all day comfort and optimizes biomechanics.  Molded dual-density EVA midsole creates extra cushioning for hiking comfort and enhances proprioception.  A Molded and minimal TPU rentention plate allows lightweight cleat retention and enhances proprioception.  A molded Vibram® Idrogrip® outsole with 4mm self-sharpening multi-directional lugs permits long lasting traction on trails, slip resistance in water and toe protection.  Also available in a 12mm Felt outsole.

  • Vibram® soles are built from the bottom up and are designed to overcome very specific obstacles on a variety of terrains. Not a worthy replacement for the old G4's Review by Jared G
I have gone through two pairs of the old G4s and two pairs of the G3 felts. Loved those boots. Bought these a few weeks ago after waiting for my local shop to get them in. These boots are a horrible replacement to the old top of the line boots.
Very stiff and uncomfortable. I'm trying to break them in, but Simms may have gone too far looking for durability and sacrificed all comfort. Also, the lace system sucks. They don't get tight enough around the foot, but strangle the ankles. Haven't had them long enough to weigh in on the lace durability issue yet. Their is also a small area midway down where there is a pretty good size area where the tongue overlap doesn't prevent small rocks, mud and silt from getting in the boot.

Sorry Simms. I'm a Simms fanboy. You products are awesome and customer service better than awesome, but these boots are so uncomfortable that I'm going to throw them in a closet somewhere and forget about them. Please go back to the old G4s. I'm going to have to "downgrade" back into a pair of G3's

Worst tightening system I ever used Review by Surreal
I traded my guide g3's for a pair of these and if you use you boots lots, like a comfortable boot, and like a reliable boot DO NOT BUY these. The tightening system is the worst i have ever seen. This boot cannot be evenly tightened all the way up. The only way it allows itself to tighten is by way over tightening the top 2 inches and the rest of the boot is loose. Because of this your foot slides around. My guide lace up boots from Simms were so hassel free the tightening system on these boots Is A gimmick that fails in every catagory

Time will tell Review by Richie
Dropped a lot of money on these boots while they are still new they are the most uncomfortable pair of boots I have ever owned believe the others here to be correct in that the placement of the boa system is to blame will review again after 6 months of wear hopefully things improve

[Response from Simms Customer Care Team] - Thank you Richie. These boots are stiff and do require time to break them in. We suggest wearing them around the house a few times before heading the river. Once they break in they will give you the stability needed to cross any river with confidence. We look forward to your update.

Same ankle problems Review by Brent
I am a Simms guy for life. Decided to go out of the comfort zone of lace up boots and try the boa. Felt ok in the store, couldnt get it quite as tight in the toe/arch as I wanted but it felt ok. Spent two full days on the river and ended up with a bruise the size of a tennis ball on my ankle from the boa.
Just have to hope my shop can help me out and maybe get these traded back in or I get to take the hit below the belt and hope someone buys them used for half of what I paid for them.. If not I am 400 bucks in to own the G3's...

The good and bad. Review by John
First of all, what they say about these boots being a "Bomber", heavy duty wading boot is true. They are also VERY comfortable and very easy to slip on. Unlike some of the other reviewers, I was able to tighten the instep portion of the boot by flexing the boot as I tightened the BOA.

However, I give these boots 3 stars because they are just too heavy duty for me. I can't feel the rocks under my feet and going from wading on felt for years, the rubber sole is just not my cup of tea. In some of my wading situations, they are just too slippery, I do not want to stud these because I am in an out of my boat on a regular basis. I watched a review video and they talked about how the sole was flexible. After wading in these for a month, I cannot feel the bottom of the river and I almost feel like my feet are numb. I fish 75- 90 days a year as a Maine guide and will be buying another pair of my previous boots. I am going to put these boots in a closet and use them as a backup pair and for waters away from my home.

Solid Boots Review by MNTrout
I have put 40 days in the boots since the start of our steelhead season. These have been the best boots I have owned. They are very quick to put on and have allowed me to put more time on the water.

My only complaint is they are a bit thin and get cold quick during the late winter months.

Great Boot Review by Matt
I upgraded from the Rivertek Boa and these boots are much better than the Riverteks. Lighter and more comfortable. Great boot. The single Boa lace leaves some room for improvement in tightening lower on your foot. And made sure to order a replacement Boa lace kit so as not to lose a day on the river should a lace break.

Great boot ruined by the BOA Review by Marc
Everything about this boot is fantastic except for the BOA system. No matter what I try I cannot get the boot tight around my foot without the ankle being so tight as to cut off my circulation. I've tried flexing my ankle back and forth while tightening, tightening after they're wet, pulling on the wire while I tighten them but I give up. Bought a pair of G3 boots this morning and my feet are much happier. First Simms product I've been seriously disappointed in and wouldn't recommend.

[Response from Simms Customer Care Team] - Thanks for review Marc. Glad you were able to find a boot fit well.

Ankle Concerns - Still Trying Review by Bonefisher
Got these delivered and overall very impressed by fit and finish. Usual top quality Simms stuff. Unfortunately when I put them on it seems as if the others on here are right.

When I cinched them down enough to get snug on my feet, the ankle seems way too tight. I am going to take them out on the river soon and see if the break in at all, but at first blush, seems like it may be a design problem.

Kind of a bummer if so. Will weigh back in when tested more.

Disgraced by Lace Review by Conor
I would give these boots one star if it weren't for the stellar customer service Simms gave me. Over the past summer and fall I was doing river ecology work in remote Alaska. I got these boots because in anticipation of being in the river all day for weeks at a time and wanted something comfortable and durable.

Summary: laces are no good and the cables break after minimal use (10-14 days). Soles have awesome grip in and out of water but don't hold cleats very well (I frequently lost cleats shortly after installing - and I was careful not to over-tighten and strip out the rubber).

After 10 days of work the cable on my right boot broke. I replaced it with the backup lace I purchased, then four days later the lace on my left boot broke. Shortly after that the right lace broke again. Luckily I had an abundance of zip-ties, which worked super well, but I went through a ton since I was changing them every day.

Once out of the backcountry I called Simms, begged and pleaded for them to send me G3's instead. They were really apprehensive about sending me the G3's without first receiving the G4's. After explaining that I essentially live in my wading boots and couldn't part with them until having a replacement pair, they sent up G3's. To boot, I've been super late on sending the G4's back (which I'm doing today) and they haven't griped about it (sorry Simms).
