Interview with Colby and Brian Trow, owners, Mossy Creek Fly Fishing.
Harrisonburg, VA doesn't appear to be that big of a place. Where are most of your customers coming from? Harrisonburg is a small town with just over 50,000. We are 2 hours from D.C., Northern VA, Richmond, and Roanoke. We are at the 'gateway' of trout fishing in the State and are surrounded by smallmouth and musky rivers. So folks in VA looking for the best diversity of fishing end up in our backyard.
What music is likely to be on in your fly shop? Reggae, Rock, Blue Grass or Country
Ever get any noteworthy politicians through the door from D.C.? We have instructed many of our local politicians but we have guided many individuals from the Pentagon and Dept. of Defense. Admiral Michael Mullen from his time being CNO of the Navy through his command as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff as well as Gordon England who was serving as the Deputy Secretary of Defense. Country music superstar Luke Bryan also fishes with us when in the area for concerts.
What's the biggest misunderstanding about fishing in western VA? Most people don't believe musky live in Virginia, and how wrong they are. We are a sleeper cell of a musky fishing force in VA. With the New, James, Shenandoah, and Potomac Rivers, we have enough water to keep you busy for a decade!
Big carp or big musky? Which one would you prefer to catch on a fly? Hmmm, that question hurts my brain. Both are challenging difficult fish to catch and why we love them both so much. Musky are the new rage right now, but there is still nothing like pitching flies to actively feeding fish.
