Unfortunately, not reliableI love Simms products, but this one fell short. I lost two new pair of nippers with this retractor. I was 100% I secured them correctly, but I lost 2 within 6 weeks. Product needs improvement.
Been fine. Attach to material...I’ve had my grey/orange retractor for 3 years now. I have not had any clips open or lost any items. I use mine with the simms nippers and they are right where I need them, when I need them! Use your best judgment on where to attach the retractor... you will be fine. There are many Simms products that have specified areas to insert the retractor and keep it from moving around on you. I would buy another if mine was lost. Thanks Simms!
Great brand - terrible productI'm a huge fan of Simms and this is the only product of theirs that I have any issue with.
I've had my retractor for two years now and have had a number of issues throughout. Firstly the retractor's mount broke after only a few months of stream fishing. I managed to fix it myself with some epoxy glue which seems to have done the trick.
Unfortunely last week while fishing I experienced another issue, and it seems like I'm not the first. The retractor has a tendency to open by itself. This resulted in my Simms guide nippers disappearing from my chest pack while wading my local streams.
Really disappointed as I was a huge fan of my Nippers firstly, and secondly because I am probably going to have to replace my retractors too so that I don't have to face this situation again.
Hoping for a huge improvement in the design of future retractors.

Only use these in wide open spaces.I bought the retractor and pinned it on my hip pack. I hung my pliers off of them.
This was all hunky dory until I had the finger loop on pliers snag on a twig as I was walking. The plastic holding the metal pin actually cracked off before there was enough tension in the retractor to let me know something was wrong.
Fortunately I heard my pliers strike a rock, otherwise I probably would have lost them.
Say goodbye to your nippersHigh end nippers. Love Simms waders, saw the retractor. Bought the retractor. Retractor fell off. The high end nippers o got for Christmas are somewhere out there probably connected to the retractors. Bummer. Simms is still awesome.

Great Tool - Terrible attachmentLove this tool attached to a float tube ... no more digging for the line clippers or hook sharpener, retracts compactly and no wires to bur or kink like spring retractors.
Attachment pin clasp is unreliable. I've lost two over the side because the clasp has unknowingly rotated open. As much as I like the tool and at a great price, I've got to move onto something that stays in the float tube.
Retractor came apart and I was left with just the pin, the retractor along with my brown trout Abel nippers gone!I bought 2 of these restractors that I attached to my backpack. Last week I was fishing the Eucumbene river here in Australia and when I went to tie a new fly on I noticed that my retractor and attached Abel Brown Trout nippers were gone and all that was left was the pin still attached to my backpack strap. I am so disappointed. I have many Simms products from my G3 waders, Simms packs and my Acklins jacket. I have never before had a problem. My retractor was the Orange and grey version. I hope you are able to do something about this for me.

Simms needs a complete revamp on their designAlthough the Simms Customer Service was nice enough to replace a retractor because the metal locking mechanism actually broke, taking away a nice pair of nippers along with it, the replacement also had issues.
As many have stated, the metal assembly has the tendency to get detached from the plastic since it is secure by only two small holes. Luckily this happened where I could retrieve my new pair of nippers, so not much was lost. Went home and epoxied the connection between the metal and the plastic rivets.
Unfortunately, I am now noticing that the clasp that secures the pin has the tendency to open on its own, thus a pair of hemostats are now at the bottom of the river.
As I said, I already took advantage of Simm's great customer service to replace one of them, and I don't think the postage being paid to send these back time and time again is worth the price of the actual retractor. Considering that the retractors are now being found in 'outlet' shops, it looks like Simms finally scrapped the bad design and hopefully a better product is in the wings.
Thank you for your honest review, Miguel.

Ignore my previous reviewSo in my previous review I lost my retractor and all that was on it because the pin's swivel clip came open. I went to the same fly fishing store and talked to the owner and showed how I had it on my chest pack and he said that I had it on wrong. I had the pin just "clipped" onto one of the chest pack loops and whole retractor was dangling. Turns out you need to have the swivel clip flush to the fabric so it doesn't randomly open. Ignore my previous review. I'll give myself 1 star for stupidity and the retractor 5 stars.
HOWEVER, they could put short instructional warning on the packaging saying to ensure that the swivel clip is flush to the fabric being pinned to in order to prevent it from randomly opening.
Good Retractor. Terrible Pin AssemblyBought at a local fly fishing store and the owner raved about them. When I first held it in my hand I noticed the swivel clip on the pin opened and closed way too easy. I asked the owner if it was going to be a problem but he said he had had his for years and no issues. Should have trusted my gut instinct. The swivel clip on the pin opened twice the retractor came off my chest back. Luckily I noticed that happening and I thought about putting some thread lock on it to fix it but instead trusted the Fly shop owner's advice. Needless to say the third time it opened yesterday and I lost this $15 retractor as well as $35 worth of high end nippers, nail knot tool and leader straightener. Not happy.
The saying is true: "You're only as strong as its weakest link" and it's a fantastic retractor with, unfortunately, a super cheap pin assembly. Should have read the reviews here before I bought it.

You will lose your nippers !I have purchased 2 of these and both have broken within days of use. The pin will detach from the body of the retractor taking with it your expensive nippers. Simms should know that this is a problem but the design remains unchanged.

Pretty bad connectionAfter only a few weeks of use the metal pin assembly started to wobble and work itself free of the plastic body. I took a soldering iron to the plastic rivets thru the pin and tried to get it back in place, coated the area where the metal meets plastic with epoxy to just seal it up, works great now.
Very poor designI have had the same issue as others have noted. I just bought a pair of these and within minutes of attaching the SIMMS Retractor the locking ring on one just fell right off and the other the entire pin assemble came completely apart from the retractor!!!
I'm sure glad this happened at home and not out on the water where I'm sure I would have lost my nippers and hemostats.
What a waste of money! Would not recommend!

GreatWorks great even after 3-4 seasons of hard fishing!

Merp, we are very glad to hear that your retractor is working well for you! Thank you for taking the time to write a review.
Poor designI bought two retractors a month ago. The first one broke free from the pin within two uses. I put the other on and now I am down a retractor, an Abel nipper and my fav stars and stripes hemostat. Fragile device.

DisappointingRotating lock mechanism doesn't stay; way too much play; pin comes out. As a result, the retractor came off my pack twice in one day. I owned the previous version of this device; and it work flawlessly, unitil I broke it. Would not recommend this version, until the locking mechanism is fixed.
Should have listened to others. . .Despite the bad reviews here and elsewhere, I still bought two of these. Based on the comments, I reinforced the pin-to-cylinder connection with superglue. ...But, the teeny hinge pin that holds the 2 parts of the safety pin together at the rear broke after about a month (and very light usage). Luckily I noticed it at home.
Hopefully when Simms re-designs these and decides to use more than 15 cents of materials they'll change the color, or something, so people know it's safe to buy them again.
In the meantime, I would not trust these with any of my gear.
Not Simms qualityThe plastic retractor broke away from the metal pin after only a couple months use. The real bummer was that it took my Simms nippers with it (5 stars for the nippers).
Look great, but do not perform. The locking ring on the pin kept failing and the pin would come loose over and over again. Last time I was out the locking ring just fell off!! Needless to say the retractor is now completely useless. If these retractors attached more securely they would be an awesome product.
Lost NippersThere are two issues with the Simms Retractor: (1) I just lost my nippers. The metal clip appears to be weak and not well designed. Should be a positive connection. Also metal is very thin, like the diameter of a small safety pin. Was not doing anything unusual, like walking through heavy brush, etc. Only owned it a few months. (2) The retractor attaches with a pin clip that holds the retractor vertical. However, when you pull the nippers to the side, the retractor does not rotate and the coil catches on the body. I like the Fishpond Swivel retractor that is held on with a pin and rotates. Much easier to use.
[Response from Simms Customer Care Team] Great suggestion RBP. We have passed your idea on to the product team.
fairI bought 5 of these at $9.95 a pop! They have such a cool look so they were meant to replace the old black style! But there is definitely a problem with the glue that holds the pin to the retractor! They just don't put enough on it

Not the quality I expect from a SIMMS productI purchased two of these. The pin assembly of the first one broke off of the retractor housing, when trying to attach the retractor to my SIMMS Dry Creek Hip Pack. I took the other one and tried again very carefully, but the same result occurred. I will not buy these retractors again – never ever. Very disappointing.

weakBroke away from the pin clip after minimal use. I also placed it on my pack. The older version was much more robust.
Keeps on working!I fish in the Headwater Mesh Vest. I loved the retractors, so I bought 2 of these...after 2-3 seasons of heavy, they work perfectly!
Best designReplaced all my zingers--they barely made it one season, and I've tried sooo many. Now I only use these Simms Retractors and I have no regrets. These are more durable, quiet, and have a longer reach.
Not normal Simms qualityI purchased two of these and one broke when I tried to put it on my bag. It sepparated from the pin clip. I tried the other with my simms sling pack and it broke off from the pin clip and I lost a $50 set of Able nippers! Not real happy with the design.
prone to breakingThese are now made of plastic and are very prone to failing. I bought two this spring and have had both break (the pin mechanism pulls off). When they were made of metal, they were good, now they are very poor, and you can lose whatever is connected to them. To be fair, I can fish in very brushy situations, and I am out 125 or more days a year, but I expect better quality from Simms.
Nice All AroundI have replaced all of my wind-up retractors with these because of a few reasons:
1 - Rust proof design. Besides the pin on the back and the clip, there is no internal coil spring to rust up or fill with river junk.
2 - Mount anywhere. I like how they fit in the small spaces along a zipper or on the edge of a pouch or vest pocket.
3 - They're QUIET! It may not seem like much, but I enjoyed getting rid of the squeeks and zipping sounds of the wind-up retractors.
