Description

Sub-freezing temps and the elements that come with late fall, winter, and early spring have the tendency to deter a lot of anglers. That’s perfectly fine with us. More fair-weather fishermen equals more empty parking lots, and vacant water. The truth is, when dressed for success, not only is cold wet/weather tolerable, it can also be quite productive. Traditionally, the solution to cope with challenging weather has been to layer appropriately, and throw a waterproof bib and jacket on as the outer layer. The problem is, the colder it is, the more layers you need and the more bulk you collect. Our answer, the Challenger Insulated Jacket and Bib, a waterproof package that warms like no other. To see how this kit has been performing during its intended season, we checked in with a few of our pros who fish in the frostiest parts of North America on open and hard water alike. Read their reviews below.

  1. Incredible

    100%

Can a jacket actually help you catch more fish? YES, since not worrying about being cold and dry allows a guy to concentrate more on the task at hand.

Fishing trout streams here in the Driftless region of Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa throughout the winter offers some challenges... cold and wet are two but finding a jacket that covers those two but allows for movement and offers lightweight comfort are equally important. Check, check check and check. Love this jacket and it’s become my everyday “Go2”.

Hard to improve on perfection but if it had a two way zipper it’d be better.

Lots of pockets inside and out ... a tray type pocket inside the lower part makes for a great spot for backup glove storage and the inside vertical chest pocket just off the front zipper is the ultimate spot for keys and cellphone or small camera.

One detail you tend to only see in premium skiwear is the small microfiber wipe/towel for cleaning glasses - nice touch!

I’ve now paired it up with the matching cap with ear flaps and gloves with merino wool liners.

Client said I looked like a SIMMS catalog — replied with “but I’m warm”

Now end of March and hopefully this bad boy is tucked away for the next seven or eight months!

This jacket is built to be roomy ... allows room for under layers but if you are deciding between sizes you might go to with the smaller.
  2. Best Insulated Fishing Jacket

    100%

Fishing through the seasons in Minnesota where I am from you have to deal with all weather conditions. The insulated challenger jacket is a great product for early spring and late fall fishing in the boat and also Ice fishing. The challenger jacket is less bulky then other products I have used in the past but is still just as warm.
  3. Great gear

    100%

Spent three 12 hour days on the ice first time out with this coat and the insulated challenger bibs. Minus 12 with a high of 10. Warm and comfortable all day. My equipment gets used hard, and Simms’ stuff is always up to the challenge. Could use a second chest pocket. Looking forward to using for ice out perch fishing in the boat as well!
  4. CHANGED THE WAY I DRESS FOR MY WINTER SEASON

    Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin
“The Challenger Insulated Suit from Simms has changed the way I dress for my winter season and that goes for open water, as well as hardwater. This suit allows me to wear fewer layers which means, less bulk and more energy at the end of the day. The idea of getting cold is no longer a thought. Hands down the lightest, and most breathable winter season suit I have ever worn. Primaloft® insulation, Simms trusted waterproofing, removable padded knees, and the most durable outer shell I have yet to see in a winter suit, it's no wonder I’m able to truly 'forget the forecast' on those -40 days we experience up here in the North.”

  5. LOVE AT FIRST ZIP

    Minnetonka, Minnesota
“When I slipped into this perfectly articulated suit it was love at first Zip. I've worn a lot of different winter suits for ice fishing in my lifetime, and have put every singe one through the same test. The test is simple, drill holes all day, fish outside, sun up to sun down regardless of the forecast. Out of all of the suits, the only one that has passed with flying colors is the Challenger Insulated. It has been a real game changer for me because of the perfect balance of warmth and mobility that it offers. Other suits with heavier insulated layers tend to wear you down throughout the day. However, because the Primaloft® insulation is so light, you’d never even know you’re wearing a winter coat, except for the fact that it’s so incredibly warm.
The suit provides the options to layer and adjust to sub-zero temps without worrying about sweating too much from drilling a set of holes .
In my opinion, the suit is the be all end all suit for winter fishing – however, I also feel it’s the perfect suit for those colder, wet days on the boat during the spring and fall.”

  6. BUILT FOR TAKING ON THE WORST CONDITIONS

    Hayward, Wisconsin
“In an effort to better describe the quality of this suit I will tell you a bit about how I ice fish. I spend five to seven days a week on the ice across northern Wisconsin and Minnesota. I run and gun. My days are not spent in an ice house or sitting on a bucket. I am constantly drilling holes, moving around, kneeling in slush, and making long runs on 4-wheelers or snowmobiles.
Along with all the normal stresses our fishing gear is put through, I am also doing a lot of physical labor in my Challenger Insulated Suit. Moving shacks, loading/unloading transportation and fixing equipment is all part of a normal day for an ice guide. I have a serious demand for seriously tough equipment.
As ice anglers, we demand gear that is warm. Check that off the list because this suit is incredibly warm. Unlike most ice suits, the Challenger Insulated is very light in weight, and extremely comfortable to wear.
A durable ice suit is also extremely important, and often overlooked. I have been blown away by the toughness of this suit. I have grown accustomed to going through a pair of ice bibs each season, mostly due to rips, and the waterproofing breaking down. The Challenger has stood up to everything I have put it through and shows no signs of giving up. I would highly recommend this product to anyone looking for a superior product that is built for taking on the worst conditions winter dishes out.”

  7. Lightweight, super comfortable

    Lake St. Claire, Michigan
“I spend most of my time these days fishing from a boat on open water. For years, I have been trying to find a suit that I could wear in the late fall, and early spring that would keep me warm and dry. In the past, I’ve used suits that were fully waterproof, but they have all been bulky, and heavy. The suits that I wore that were more comfortable were only water resistant and I would get wet if there was a steady rain. Finally came Simms’ Challenger Insulated Bibs and Jacket. This is exactly what I had been waiting for. The suit is light, and comfortable. I fish in it for ten plus hours at a time and my back isn't hurting from the weight of the suit pulling on my shoulders all day. I have been in heavy rain, sleet, and snow and stayed dry all day. I highly recommend this suit, especially if you are looking something that is lightweight, super comfortable, and will keep you warm and dry all day long.”

  8. Doesn't Drag You Down

    Beaver Dam, Wisconsin
“The first time I wore the Challenger Insulated suit, I was fishing from the boat. It was a November day in Wisconsin – cold, but not a lot of wind, so I figured it’d be my last day on open water for a while. It was for days like this that I got the suit. After wearing it for an hour or so, I couldn't help but notice how light and forgiving it was when I was casting. What I was really contemplating in my head was this suit going to be warm enough for ice fishing because I have never worn an insulated suit that was that comfortable and un-restricting. I have really been a big fan of the Primaloft® insulation for how warm it is compared to how light it is. On that first day, I was starting to think that this suit could work through the winter. I spend 60+ days each winter guiding on Devil’s Lake in North Dakota for the Perch Patrol Guide Service where getting use to weeks of below zero temps is the norm. After wearing the suit for the first couple days of guiding, I was so impressed, I started singing its praises to my guide buddies. I can honestly say it’s warmer than any ice suit I have ever worn but the best thing about it is the weight. It doesn't drag you down or feel stiff when you move around which helps a lot while walking through deep snow. I have worn this suit for 38 of the last 41 days and it’s still as strong and warm as it was on that first day. Extremely impressed and highly recommended.”

  9. A Game Changer

    Hayward, Wisconsin
“When it comes to northern Wisco weather, it doesn’t get any worse than the dreaded mix of snow/rain mix. For me, I can take the snow, it’s the rain that drives me insane. Unfortunately, I’ll never be able to control the weather. When this icy brew falls from the sky in November, you know it’s going to be a challenging day on the water. However, the odds are good that the musky will be active. The problem is staying warm and therefore, stay focused. Nothing helps this predicament more than the right gear. Staying warm means staying in the game. The Simms Challenger Insulated Suit was the ‘game changer’ of this year’s musky season. The suit was key in staying dry, and warm in the worst conditions Mother Nature threw at us. This means that I can row back up and hit that spot for a third time, because I know there’s a musky lurking. It means being able to stay out just a little longer than I would if I didn’t have such a warm suit. For us, it’s all about one eat. That being said, an extra 10 minutes can make the day. Do you want to be shivering and only thinking about the cold when this happens? I personally do not. I want to be ready to strip set so hard the fish does a head stand and knows right off the bat who’s leading the dance.”

  10. My first thought: surprising light

    Kenora, Ontario
“My first thought when I put on the new Challenger Insulated Suit was how surprisingly light it was thanks to the PrimaLoft® insulation. I live on the Canadian side of Lake of the Woods so we get ‘real’ winter conditions. I wore my suit on a couple of -30 days when I had to be out there for guide trips and it kept me warm all day.
The fit is great as well and leaves with plenty of room for layering underneath for the super cold days, or long snowmobile runs. Like all of the other Simms outerwear that I have worn, it did the job. I am proud to wear this suit and would recommend it to anybody and everybody that wants to stay warm on the ice, or in the boat on a cold day!”

  11. Love this Jacket

    100%

    This is a great product.
  12. amazing jacket

    100%

I have long looked for the right coat that's light, warm, not bulky, not too hot and has options to block out the wind and rain. It has always been an unreachable goal until I found this coat. Trust me! It's amazing and I use the heck out of it day in and day out. I would like the bibs as well, but this blue color guy has to save up for those.
  13. Awesome jacket!

    100%

One of the warmest jackets ive ever owned!
  14. Great jacket.

    100%

When the cold wind is howling and you got to keep moving forward looking for that protected shoreline to fish, this is the jacket to have. Very warm and keeps you dry. Great Velcro cuffs to keep rain and wind out.
  15. LOVE this Jacket

    100%

No more being cold in the boat when fishing the end of the walleye season on the boat. 26F, snowing and blowing 20MPH the other day and I was the only warm guy in the boat. Paired up with the insulated Challenger Bibs, it's a home run.
So much lighter, warmer and more comfortable than my other cold weather jacket.
  16. All day warm

    100%

I'm a new Simms believer/first time buyer...My buddy was excited to get the new challenger insulated jacket and bibs, so he brought them into work for me to try on. At first, I kinda jokingly thought, Simms must be proud of their work with the big logos on it. He let me try them on. I was very impressed with the fit, feel, and attention to design for function. I knew I had to get a set for myself. That was a few weeks ago....I've been waiting for some cold weather to try it out. Yesterday We spent 8 hours fishing in an open boat, on a windy, cold, Michigan, mid-November day. I had a blast! I was warm and comfortable all day. Now I know, they do have something to be proud of (and I'm proud to wear), it deserves the big Simms logos.
