takes a while to learn assembly but it does the job in the water

Ken K, 9/6/2017

This staff doesn't have the major problem of my previous Folstaf staff: refolding it after use. The segments of my Folstaf would often stick together requiring significant effort to get them to separate Although I found the Simms staff awkward to assemble at first compared to the Folstaf, after using it for a few outings I was able to learn how best to manage it. Now I can quickly assemble the staff (easier on land than in water) and, so far, I have had no problems with segments sticking together. Once assembled it is light but sturdy. It does the job.

New isn't always better

Hugh, 7/6/2017

I prefer the older model. Less complicated, more compact and easier to use than this new model. The additional height is nice but Simms should have just lengthened the older one if that was the design. The label says not intended for full body weight so take notice on that warring. A wading staff is for situations where a staff is needed for body support and not just a light weight walking stick for calm water. Wish Simms would design a stout stick for problematic wading. How about breaking the aluminum tradition and market a good hickory wooden stick that is dependable. Bet a wooden stick would be a hit on the market as most guys use a staff to keep from falling.

I liked The Old One Better

Obvioiusman, 6/10/2017

As stated in other reviews, the holster is hard to use wet air dry. I was using mine in Oregon where the streams and rivers are like walking on bowling balls. The very first that I used the staff the locking pin broke off. I figured out that if I tighten the locking clamp that I could keep the staff from coming apart. The staff doesn't assemble and disassemble as easily as the original. My first Simms staff was simple to assemble, I just pulled it and pulled the handle its stop and everything locked together Reversing the aforementioned steps and it came apart. The new one is hard to disassemble. It is almost as if the cord is too short and then because of the way the handle sticks out of the holster it is hard to tell if the staff is folded up correctly.

Not there yet

Cummo, 5/8/2017

Pluses. Ease of assembly, variable height.Grip good
Minuses. Sections tend to open when caught in mud or stuck in rocks.Holster is a real pain.Staff can be awkward to remove when holster wet.Staff sticks well above holster so it rotates on my belt making removal more difficult and uncomfortable and staff more likely to fall out.Hard to disassemble especially when in water.

Performs Well; Great Simms Product!

Kevin, 1/24/2017

I have been using this staff now for about two years. I have had a very different experience than some of the other users. I find the staff extends and retracts with ease, durability has not been an issue (I am 235 lbs.), fits nicely in the Neoprene sheath and works great with the wading staff retractor, which is a must have addition. I tend to extend it and allow it to drag behind me and grab it when needed. It never seems to be in the way of my line, etc., but in my opinion is a must have safety option. I would not hesitate in recommending this product to others.

poor locking design

Rebecca, 4/10/2016

I used the former style of wading staff and within the first year of use it would not retract, and happily Simms sent me a replacement - which is this new model. This one feels sturdier than the previous and I like the grip and adjusting height. (And they sent me a retractor, which was very nice, and useful of course). However, it is about impossible to get this staff to link together and lock without a lot of fussing. The locking pin rarely lines up right, and if often lost in the shaft somewhere - leading to loosening the whole rig, pulling it to snap together, still not getting pin to align; repeat, repeat. It seems a design flaw and I hope you (Simms) can refine this otherwise good staff.

Clumsy to dissamble

Mr. Lee, 10/14/2015

I haven't used it yet--it seems decent enough as to function but it's a real pain the neck to break it down. You could very well fall just trying to do that.

Cheap. Almost unusable.

tdd4k, 9/8/2015

I own several Simms products (waders, boots, jacket, and older waiting staff) and have always been satisfied. When I got this one in the mail, I was shock at how flimsy it is and how it is isn't just doesn't work well. It's hard to break down and then reset up. I haven't fished with this yet, so it may be unfair. . .but trying to use this while in a current, then stopping to fish, and then moving (which is what a wading staff is for!), I'm not sure I'd trust this. Simply put, do not buy.

Poor Quality

MRB26, 4/30/2015

Let me prefice this by saying that I have been a loyal customer to Simms for the past 20 years. I, like many others, have known Simms to be a company that offers quality products and backs their products no matter what. While this staff has performed well when it is in working order, the aluminum that was used in the build is weak and subject to failure. This staff did not even last me a year before falling apart. I expect quality from a staff of this value from a company like Simms. Unfortunately, I was disappointed about this item and will likely go elsewhere for a new staff.

A necessity

DavedD , 12/24/2014

When planning a trip to Haida Gwaii I read a few reports about rivers stained with the tannins from the Cedar trees. Visibility, for humans, was apparently quite low and the commenter suggested a wading staff.

I like Simms products so I decided on this staff and bought it. I was wading out to a gravel bar and decided to try the staff. Once I had used it for a short time I was asking myself why I didn't buy this 10 years ago. It wasn't long and I was using the staff in the river, in the old growth, and even walking down the trail. Once I assembled it I used it all day. I'm fairly young and in decent shape...still, this thing is great.

The retractor is a must if you don't have one. When casting the staff is downstream and there when you need it. No tangles in the line and no issue when fighting big Steelhead. The system works well.

Ironic though - the safety sticker that says do not remove.....comes off on its own.
